The latest from Dean about his "Unbound" book tour...
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:07AM Just off the road from two weeks of touring. D.C. was a great capper, a jam-packed room at Sidwell Friends and radio interviews at VOA and the Bob Edwards Show, where both exclaimed at the end that they couldn't wait for the movie. Met lots of great people, including Chinese in New York CIty, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., some raised in China and some in the U.S. Also met a woman who started the Richmond chapter of Red Moon, a club for American families who have adopted Chinese babies. Among the recent quotes below, I particularly like the first one and found that to be the prevailing sentiment among the Chinese. Daniel Metraux's is a great scholarly endorsement, and how can you not like a blurb from Dad of Divas?! Thanks to everyone who helped put on the tour! All best, Dean
“I . . . wish to congratulate you on your deep gift to us Chinese and Chinese-American people for preserving history.” —Lily Liu, reader in Washington, D.C.
“I found the book to be a fascinating and heart-wrenching tale that was hard to put down. . . . I was entranced by the story and the amazing journey that these people were on.” —Dad of Divas blog
“King, more than any other writer, recaptures the drama and flavor of this momentous time in Chinese history. . . . Unbound is a must read for any student of modern Chinese history and ranks with Red Star Over China as one of the classic narratives of the early days of the CCP.” —Daniel A. Metraux, professor of Asian Studies at Mary Baldwin College
“Dean King's book is deeply researched, drawing from first-person accounts of survivors, Chinese historians and a range of historical scholarship, much of it never before translated into English...Never idealizing the story of the soldiers, Unbound renders, with thrilling precision, their fear and uncertainty.” —The New Haven Advocate
“Thirty of the Long Marchers were females, and in Unbound: A True Story of War, Love, and Survival, journalist Dean King provides an often riveting account of their journey through snowy mountains and high-altitude swamps.” —The Oregonian

I have waited for a well-researched and objective account of the Long March to test the hypothesis that humans can walk long distances in challenging environments wearing simple straw sandals. They may well have done this during the human migrations that populated the Earth. I found this support and so much more in Unbound. This is an inspiring story of one of the great tests of human will and endurance. Enjoy!
Hi Dean,
I was looking for a way to contact you from your website. I thought I would try commenting on this blog. I was wondering if you would be willing to discuss with me some questions I have about Capt. Riley. I am doing a research/writing project and just finished his memoir. I recently purchased your book, and I specifically have questions regarding Michel, the sailor sacrificed after they were first wrecked.
If you are willing, I would love to converse with you.
Thanks,
Jennifer Marchman
